In a significant move to revive Kenya’s fluorspar mining sector, Sofax Fluorspar Kenya has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China’s Mizztech Group to refurbish its Kerio Valley-based processing plant
The agreement, formalized at the Kenya National Chamber of
Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) headquarters, paves the way for an Engineering,
Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract to be finalized within the next
six months.
This partnership follows Sofax Fluorspar Kenya’s recent
acquisition of a 25-year mining license (valid until June 2050) from the State
Department of Mining, granting it exclusive rights to mine, mill, and market
Acidspar Grade Fluorspar.
Under the license terms, the company is tasked with
revitalizing fluorspar mining operations, modernizing the processing plant, and
boosting export capacity under the Sofax Fluorspar Project.
John Masanda, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sofax
Fluorspar Kenya, emphasized the transformative impact of the deal.
“This MoU goes beyond plant refurbishment—it’s about
unlocking Kerio Valley’s fluorspar potential, generating employment, and
elevating Kenya’s standing in the global fluorspar market. Over the next 25
years, we aim to deliver sustainable value to all stakeholders.”
Charles Cheng, CEO of Mizztech Group, highlighted
fluorspar’s industrial importance: “Fluorspar is vital for steel, aluminum,
glass, ceramics, and chemical manufacturing. By introducing advanced technology
and expertise, we will ensure Kerio Valley meets international processing
standards and competes effectively in global markets.”
This collaboration marks a pivotal milestone in Kenya’s
efforts to reinvigorate its mining sector and expand its role in the global
fluorspar supply chain.
