Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has
challenged President William Ruto to back his claims of corruption in
Parliament with concrete action, questioning how he knew about alleged bribes
without ordering arrests.
The outspoken MP, who spoke on Citizen TV’s ‘Tonight’ show on
Thursday, questioned the President’s reference to an alleged Ksh.10 million payout, insisting that as the Head of State, he had the mandate to act on
intelligence rather than make statements.
“Why should I be surprised when the President says that a
certain Ksh.10 million was issued and was asking MPs who were in Karen? I was
never there, I couldn’t be invited. So how did he know that Ksh.10M was given?
Well, he receives raw intelligence, so why didn’t he arrest the person or order
his arrest? He should have done that before he even asked the rhetorical
question,” she stated.
The legislator further accused the President of deflecting
blame while failing to address corruption within his own office.
“It was a statement meant for other people to hear that, oh,
the President is finally fighting corruption. Can the President face the camera
and tell us that he is not corrupt before he even tells Parliament?” She posed.
“Why should I be surprised when the soloist of the song we
have been singing is soloing again? Why should I be surprised when a rhetorical
question is asked again and the answer is obviously known?”
Wamuchomba urged Ruto to only “micromanage his State House”
before attempting to also control other levels of government such as Parliament
by making such allegations.
“He should know that he is not the guy who used to live in
Karen as a deputy president; he is now the Head of State and should micromanage
his State House; review his cameras and get to know what happens in his State House
first before he speaks about Parliament. He should realise that he is no longer
the guy who meddles in the issues of Parliament,” she added.
On his part, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who also spoke
during the same interview, admitted that corruption is a problem in Kenya,
generally, but denied ever witnessing a lawmakers receiving a bribe in
Parliament.
“I can’t deny that there is no corruption in Kenya, but I have
not seen a Member of Parliament being given money. But the President should
come out clearly and say that so and so is corrupt and they should be
prosecuted,” said Owino.
President Ruto had recently claimed that some MPs demand bribes
to influence proceedings, sparking outrage among legislators who dismissed the
statement as baseless and provocative.
