Grief hangs heavy in Nairobi’s Uthiru estate, where the family of 26-year-old Faith Binzali is demanding answers following her death during a cesarean section at St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Health Centre in Kangemi.

According to relatives, Binzali, who was admitted to the facility on September 2 as an expectant mother, was taken into surgery after medics recommended a cesarean delivery. While doctors delivered a healthy baby boy, the joy of new life was quickly overshadowed by tragedy.

Her father, Bernard Babu, recalls the shocking turn of events.
“In less than 30 minutes, they told us the baby had been delivered safely. Moments later, they asked me to pray. Then someone rushed in with what looked like an oxygen machine. Soon after, I was told, ‘We tried our best but we could not make it,’” he recounted.

Babu says he forced his way into the surgical ward, only to find his daughter in a distressing state.
“There was blood everywhere. My daughter was soaked in blood. The doctors were nowhere to be found,” he told reporters, visibly shaken.

The family later transferred Binzali’s body to Chiromo Mortuary, where an autopsy reportedly revealed she died due to lack of oxygen to the brain and alleged complications from excessive anesthesia.
“The postmortem showed they injected her with too much anesthesia. I want to know why they did that, who the doctor was, and why they could not refer her to another hospital,” Babu said.

Her husband, Ndung’u Mungai, is devastated by the loss of his wife just days after welcoming their newborn.
“She was special to me, deep in my heart. I am in so much pain,” he said, questioning why the hospital has remained silent since the incident.

Attempts to get an official statement from the facility were unsuccessful. Nurses at the hospital expressed regret over the tragedy but indicated that management was unavailable to comment.

Meanwhile, police say they have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding Binzali’s death and are recording statements from key individuals linked to the case.
