Gov't to harmonise salaries, adopt AI to boost public service delivery – CS Ruku

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku says the government is working on harmonising civil servants’ salaries and embracing digital transformation, including the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), to improve efficiency in service delivery.

Speaking during the closing ceremony of the 44th edition of the Kenya Civil Service Sports Organization (KECOSO) Games at Moi Stadium in Embu, Ruku acknowledged disparities in pay across the public sector and said reforms were underway.

“The government is focused on harmonising salaries and other earnings across the public service as part of a broader effort to motivate civil servants and improve service delivery,” said Ruku.

“We recognise the concerns around pay disparities, and we are committed to ensuring equity and fairness in remuneration.”

The CS praised civil servants for their dedication, saying Kenya has one of the strongest public service workforces on the continent.

“I want to commend our civil servants. You are doing a commendable job, and I can confidently say that Kenya has the best public service in Africa,” he said.

Ruku also highlighted the government’s digital-first strategy being spearheaded by the Ministry of ICT, saying AI and digital tools would be central to transforming operations.

“As the world moves rapidly into the AI era, Kenya cannot afford to lag behind. We are encouraging all public servants to embrace AI tools in their daily work to remain competitive and effective,” he said.

Ruku also urged ministries, departments, and agencies to take advantage of training opportunities at the Kenya School of Government (KSG), particularly in AI and digital skills, noting that continuous training would be key for career progression and promotions.

The CS further warned civil servants against corruption and challenged them to serve Kenyans diligently.

He also underscored the importance of sports and talent development in building cohesion within the public service, citing the government’s support for Harambee Stars during the recent CHAN competitions.
