The government targets to register at least one million Kenyans in a fresh identification card acquisition drive in the next 12 months.

CS for interior Kipchumba Murkomen, who spoke after touring the National Registration Bureau in Nairobi, said the Department of Registration of Persons will, from next week, roll out a mobile registration call across the country to ensure Kenyans of age acquire the cards.

Murkomen said the government has acquired a modern machine that can print at least 15,000 ID cards in a day.

"Even as the IEBC is carrying out mass registration of voters, this is the time to get your ID in record time. We are also not just registering Kenyans but also aliens in Kenya, refugees, so that they can access services," he stated.

"We want to appeal to the youth to get your IDs so that you can begin transforming our nation."

Further, the CS revealed that more than 400,000 uncollected identification cards are lying in registration offices across the country, even as he called chiefs to facilitate how the owners can pick them.

He also issued a stern warning to local administrators who have been exploiting Kenyans seeking to get an ID, saying they will face the full force of the law.
