Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani has launched the construction and equipping of two new classrooms at Ukunda Secondary School in Ukunda Ward, Msambweni Sub-County.

The initiative, implemented under the World Bank-funded Kenya Marine Fisheries and Socio-Economic Development (KEMSFED) Project, seeks to ease overcrowding and provide a more conducive environment for learning.

It forms part of the project’s broader agenda of enhancing social welfare and community development.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Governor Achani reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to strengthening the education sector as a foundation for sustainable development and youth empowerment.

“Investing in education is investing in the future of Kwale. When we build classrooms, we are not just building walls; we are building hope, opportunity, and a pathway out of poverty for our children,” she said.

The governor highlighted that through the Elimu Ni Sasa programme, more than 30,000 secondary and university learners from underprivileged families have benefitted from county bursaries since 2013. However, she expressed concern that the National Budget Controller had suspended the release of the County Bursary Fund, warning that the move jeopardizes the education of thousands of vulnerable learners.

“This decision endangers the dreams of many young people. We urge the National Government to intervene and resolve the issue urgently,” she appealed.

Governor Achani further outlined the county’s education milestones, including the construction of over 500 Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) centres, the employment of at least 900 teachers, and the establishment of 43 Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) across all 20 wards. More than 130 instructors have also been hired to equip young people with practical skills for self-employment.

Kassim Choka, a member of the school’s board, hailed the new classrooms as a timely response to the school’s infrastructure needs amid rising enrolment.

“This initiative is a game-changer for Ukunda Secondary School. Our students will now have a more spacious and focused learning environment, which is crucial for academic success. We thank the governor and development partners for prioritizing our youth,” said Choka.

The project is expected to be completed within six months, adding to Kwale County’s efforts to expand inclusive, equitable, and empowering learning opportunities.
