Governor Achani lauds Wellers Football Club for steering youth away from crime

Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani on Sunday joined residents of Kitsukwa village in Vanga Ward, Lunga Lunga Sub-county, to celebrate Wellers Football Club, hailing it as a beacon of hope for youth empowerment and community development.
The club, founded in 1997 by local elders, was established as an intervention to keep young people away from crime and drug abuse. Since then, it has become a central pillar of positive youth engagement in the area.
Speaking during the celebrations, Governor Achani praised the vision of the founders, noting that Wellers FC has played a critical role in shielding the youth from destructive behaviors while nurturing their talents.
“My government has constructed a mega stadium in Kwale town where local, national, and even international matches can be hosted. This should motivate our youth to embrace sports not just as recreation, but as a viable economic activity,” said Achani.
The governor outlined her administration’s ongoing investments in sports, which include the construction and operationalization of mini-stadiums across all 20 wards, the distribution of sports equipment, and the transformation of football clubs into limited companies. According to Achani, the latter initiative is aimed at empowering clubs to transact with both government and private institutions, enabling them to access tenders and secure sustainable income streams.
Chief Officer for Sports Riziki Mwasoza echoed the governor’s sentiments, noting that the county has also purchased two buses to facilitate the transportation of football teams competing in leagues outside Kwale.
Wellers FC spokesperson Juma Salim expressed gratitude to the county government for its continued support, saying the initiatives have gone a long way in nurturing talent and promoting the sporting industry in Kwale.
Governor Achani was accompanied by several senior county officials, including County Solicitor Kisiwa Koja, Chief of Staff Joshua Mdoe, Political Advisor Mshenga Ruga, and other departmental heads.
