Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani has handed over modern fish value-addition equipment to the Diani Pastors’ Fellowship Self-Help Group in Ukunda Ward, Msambweni Sub-County, in a bid to strengthen the coastal fisheries sector and empower local communities.

The equipment, supplied under the Kenya Marine Fisheries Socio-economic Development (KEMFSED) Project funded by the World Bank, includes cold chain facilities, fish processing tools, and vending equipment.

Among the items distributed were freezers, chillers, cooler boxes, energy-saving cooking jikos, frying pans, display boxes, solar-powered systems, lamps, and umbrellas.

Governor Achani said the initiative is aimed at reducing post-harvest losses, improving market access, and creating new income opportunities for residents, particularly youth and women.

“This is not just an investment in equipment; it’s an investment in our people. By reducing fish waste and adding value to what we produce, we are building better livelihoods and growing the coastal economy,” she said during the handover ceremony.

She reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to expanding the fisheries sector, noting that coastal communities hold untapped potential in the blue economy.

“By promoting sustainable fishing and equipping our people with modern tools, we can transform lives and strengthen our local economy,” Achani added, while expressing gratitude to President William Ruto’s administration for supporting blue economy initiatives through the State Department of Blue Economy.

Under the KEMFSED project, Kwale County has distributed 48 modern fishing boats, 8 eco-tourism boats, and 6 seaweed farming boats, all equipped with fishing gear, safety tools, GPS, and fish finders to enhance efficiency and safety.

Additionally, nine modern fish landing sites have been constructed in Shimoni, Vanga, Gasi, Chale, and Tsunza, complete with cold storage and handling facilities to maintain fish quality and cut post-harvest losses.

Chairman of the Diani Pastors’ Fellowship, Danny Nganyi, welcomed the support, noting that the equipment will transform their operations.

“With proper storage and processing facilities, we can now sell fish at better prices and minimize wastage, which has been a major challenge for us,” he said.
