Githurai 44 Member of County
Assembly (MCA) Mwangi Waithira has tendered his resignation, citing the county
government’s failure to deliver on key development projects and a deteriorating
working relationship with Nairobi’s leadership.
Waithira pointed to unfulfilled
pledges made by county leadership, including the construction of a sports
ground and the upgrading of a local hospital in Githurai 44, as part of the
frustrations that led to his decision.
In what could be his final visit
to City Hall in the months to come, Waithira was seen making a quiet, measured
exit from the Nairobi County offices after formally submitting his resignation.
Before leaving, he made one final
stop to confirm that the Speaker had officially received his letter.
“Ile kitu inanikasirisha ni kwamba ile kitu
nilichaguliwa kufanya haifanyiki… watu wa Githurai wanangoja maendeleo ilhali
kuna frustrations,” he said.
Waithira
said he was disheartened by the county government’s failure to deliver on key
projects promised to Githurai residents.
“Niko na shida na vile kaunti inaendelezwa
ata nazungumza kwa niaba wa MCAs wengine ambao wanaogopa kwa sababu ya loans
ambao wako nazo,” stated Waithira.
Residents
of Githurai expressed disappointment at his departure, but many echoed his
concerns. They cited the lack of progress on several critical projects, including
the upgrading of the Githurai Level 3 Hospital, construction of access roads, a
local market, and a long-promised sports ground.
Beatrice Mumbi, one such
resident, said: “Niko
na uchungu sana kuskia MCA wangu anaresign kwa sababu ya maendeleo.”
Another, Kennedy Ndegwa,
stated: “Kitu ya
kwanza ni hii uwanja…gavana aliweka bajeti na akamwambia MCA kwamba ataweka
carpet so tumekuwa tukimpush MCA.”
In
response, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, speaking in a morning show on Radio
Citizen, dismissed claims of bias in project implementation, saying his
administration works equally with all MCAs across the county.
But, according to Waithira,
“Kama ni Ward
Development Fund unapewa project moja per year… na watu wa Githurai wanajua…”
He
is set to become the fourth Member of County Assembly to resign before
completing their term.
While the previous three cited
personal reasons for their exits, Mwangi Waithira attributes his decision to
the non-implementation of projects and frustrations within the county
administration.
