Eight people have died and scores of others injured following an accident involving a train and a bus near Morendat farm in Naivasha.

The eight are believed to be workers from Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) and were on their way home when the accident occurred a few meters from the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The driver of the bus allegedly crossed the railway crossing without checking, leading to the accident that saw the train drag the bus for over 200 metres.

Following the 5pm incident, transport along the Naivasha-Kasarani road and the Naivasha-Nakuru railway line were paralyzed as police and Red Cross officers moved in to rescue those trapped in the bus wreckage.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on phone, Naivasha OCPD Antony Keter confirmed the the accident, saying it occurred while the bus was crossing the railway line.

He said that eight people died on the spot while scores of others had been rushed to Naivasha sub-county hospital in critical condition.

A witness, Simon Kimani, said the accident could have been caused by poor visibility as it was raining heavily when the accident occurred.
