Construction of the Nyali VOK Affordable Housing Project in Mombasa is progressing steadily, with works now at 28 per cent completion.

The development, launched in February this year under the government’s Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), is set to deliver 1,932 housing units through the Boma Yangu platform.

Sitting on 23 acres in Maweni, Nyali Constituency, the project will comprise 14 residential towers offering a variety of options, including studio apartments, one-room units, two-room and two-bedroom units, as well as three-room and three-bedroom apartments. Out of the total, 474 will be affordable two-bedroom units and 210 will be affordable three-bedroom units, while 360 two-bedroom and 360 three-bedroom units will be sold at market rates.

Beyond housing, the plan incorporates a community centre, a kindergarten and school complex, a Level 4 hospital, landscaped green spaces and a clubhouse, creating what officials describe as a self-sustaining neighbourhood.

Principal Secretary for Housing, Charles Hinga, said the Nyali project reflects the government’s commitment to providing dignified homes while also stimulating employment and industry. “This plan goes beyond delivering housing units. It is about employment and wealth creation for millions of Kenyans,” he said during a site inspection.

The development has already generated more than 650 direct construction jobs and over 100 indirect opportunities in supply and services. Local artisans have been engaged, with the Kisauni Jua Kali Artisans Association contracted to fabricate steel doors and window frames for the project.

Residents of Maweni have welcomed the initiative, noting that it has transformed the area by providing jobs and driving economic activity.

The Nyali housing scheme is one of several flagship projects being implemented under the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which places housing and urban renewal at the centre of inclusive growth.

Hinga urged Kenyans to continue registering for home ownership through the Boma Yangu portal, emphasising that the houses are available to all regardless of income level.
