CCTV gaps blamed for delay in lawyer Mbobu’s murder probe

Speaking on Sunday, Murkomen condemned the murder, noting that unlike in the case of slain MP Ongondo Were—where CCTV footage captured suspects trailing him—detectives have found little to work with in Mbobu’s case. “It is not easy because the area where this incident happened had no CCTV cameras,” Murkomen said.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has linked delays in apprehending suspects behind the killing of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu to the absence of CCTV cameras along Magadi Road, where the fatal shooting occurred.

Mbobu was shot eight times by unidentified gunmen who later escaped on a motorcycle. Nearly a week later, no arrests have been made.

The Interior CS, however, expressed optimism, saying investigators have gathered valuable leads from people close to the lawyer.

“Because he is a lawyer, of course the first thing that comes to mind is whether someone was exerting revenge or attacking him by virtue of his professional duties. DCI has interviewed colleagues, family members, and is reviewing various information,” Murkomen explained.

Meanwhile, three individuals who had been held as persons of interest in the murder—George Wainaina, Eric Muhia, and Paul Mbugua—were released on Saturday night.

Their lawyer, Maulid Bare Musa, described the arrests as “malicious, unjustified, and a reckless abuse of police powers,” noting that forensic phone analysis, ballistic tests, and verified alibis cleared them of involvement.

A memorial service for the late lawyer is scheduled for Monday at All Saints Cathedral, with burial set for Wednesday, September 17, at his family home in Mua.
