Canada recognizes a Palestinian state: PM

Pro-Palestinian activists and supporters wave flags and carry placards during a National March for Palestine in central London on December 9, 2023, calling for full ceasefire in the war in Gaza. Thousands of civilians, both Palestinians and Israelis, have died since October 7, 2023, after Palestinian Hamas militants based in the Gaza Strip entered southern Israel in an unprecedented attack triggering a war declared by Israel on Hamas with retaliatory bombings on Gaza. Canada recognizes a Palestinian state, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Sunday, as his country joined other major Western nations in increasing pressure on Israel to end the war in Gaza.

"Canada recognizes the State of Palestine and offers our partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel," Carney wrote on the social media platform X.

The historic shift came as Britain and other countries also said they recognized a Palestinian state ahead of the UN General Assembly opening Monday in New York, which is due to be dominated by the issue of a Palestinian state.
