Mwangi, who made the announcement at Ufungamano House, a venue symbolic of Kenya’s fight for good governance, noted that his decision to run for the top seat is driven by the need to change the status quo and tackle corruption.
As the country marked 15 years of the constitution at Katiba celebrations, Mwangi chose the occasion to declare his presidential ambition before an audience of fellow governance champions.
Mwangi, who has been at the forefront of anti-government protests, said young Kenyans are demanding better leadership and that the time for change has come.
"We sat down after the July protests and said we are losing too many kids, attending too many funerals. We realised one thing: they can’t out-organise us. So we stopped agonising and started organising for a ballot revolution," he said.
Mwangi’s activism was sparked by the 2007/2008 post-election violence, which he covered as a photojournalist. He now warns that the country is on the brink of collapse.
"Nothing is working in this country. A vast majority of us are struggling with the high cost of living. Taxes are choking us to death, pushing families deeper into poverty and forcing businesses to close. We are told to tighten our belts, but for how much longer?" he posed.
Mwangi promised that if elected, his administration would recover all wealth acquired illegally and redirect resources to offer free education, free healthcare, and clean water for all Kenyans.
His announcement was endorsed by family members and allies, including his son Nate Mwangi, who will vote for the first time in 2027.
"In 2027, I will get the first chance to register as a voter. My generation has shown that we are ready to give our strength, commitment, and even our lives to achieve a prosperous Kenya," Nate remarked.
Former Makueni governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana and Auma Obama, sister to former U.S. President Barack Obama, also voiced their support for Mwangi’s message of change.
With the slogan “Mwanzo Mpya,” Mwangi now embarks on a nationwide tour to popularise his candidacy and rally Kenyans for what he calls a ballot revolution.
