A total lunar eclipse dubbed “blood moon” is set to start at 8:30 pm and last for 82 minutes on Sunday, September 7, 2025.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) describes the “blood moon” phenomenon based on its red glow. It transpires during a total lunar eclipse where the Earth is said to line up between the moon and the sun, hiding the moon from sunlight.

When the phenomenon occurs, the only light that reaches the moon’s surface is from the edges of the Earth’s sky. The air particles from Earth’s sky scatter out most of the blue light, and the remaining light reflects onto the moon’s surface with a red glow, making the moon appear red in the night sky.

Astronomers note that this ‘blood moon’ is the second lunar eclipse of 2025, and it is expected to be visible to nearly six billion people across the world’s most populous geographical regions. It is the longest 82 minutes moments of entirety of the decade.

Astronomers also note that, unlike solar eclipses, no special glasses are required to watch a lunar eclipse- it can be seen with the naked eye. A smartphone or a digital camera can help you capture this remarkable view.

During the 82 minutes, the moon will darken enough to allow the night sky to come alive with stars. Sharp-eyed sky observers may see planet Saturn, which is a bright yellow point of light near the moon.

Kenya is among the countries set to witness the blood moon phenomenon on Sunday night. Then, the Ministry of Tourism will host an Astro-tourism experience in Samburu County as part of launching the initiative to diversify tourism.

"The project will integrate the indigenous astronomical knowledge of Samburu communities, offering visitors a unique cultural perspective on the stars. Visitors can combine night sky explorations with daytime wildlife safaris and nature walks to enrich their overall experience," says Magical Kenya.

Other locations to watch the spectacular “blood moon” at 8:30 pm include The Landing in Nanyuki, Waterfront in Karen, Nairobi, Fort Place Grill in Kabete, Kiambu County and Ileret Campus of Turkana Basin Institute.

“This Astro-tourism launch heralds an open invitation to global travellers, astronomers, and adventure seekers to experience the wonders of the skies from Kenya, situated as it is, in the heart of Africa,” notes Magical Kenya.
