Findings from the Ministry of Health (MoH) show that 46 percent of women in Kenya do not want more children or want to be sterilised.

In its National Update on Family Planning Program in Kenya, the Ministry said that fertility preferences in women aged 15-49 have changed over the years due to uptake of family planning methods.

Among the respondents who took part in the survey, 30% said they want to delay their pregnancies and 17% wanted to have their next one soon. This means that 76% of women need contraception.

The Ministry added that 63% of women use any family planning method while 57% use any modern method, 20% use injectables, 19% (implants), 8% (pill), 4% (Intrauterine Device (IUD) and 6% use any traditional method.

IUD is a long-acting, reversible contraception method placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy for several years.

The National Financial Planning plans to increase funding to ensure sustainability and uninterrupted access to Family Planning commodities and services.

It also plans to increase Family Planning service uptake among special groups, including the Youth, PLHIV, PLWD, hard-to-reach areas and displaced populations.

This comes ahead of the World Contraception Day 2025 celebrations themed “A Choice for All: Agency, Intention and Access.

The Ministry says that the Kenyan adaptation for the celebrations will be: “Chaguo La Wote; Making Contraception Accessible”.
