SHE MEANS BUSINESS| Kenya Airways Chief Strategy Officer, Hellen Mathuka, on navigating turbulent times

Popularly known by its IATA code KQ, Kenya Airways has faced years of financial turbulence. But in 2024, the national carrier reported a remarkable milestone – its first full-year profit in over a decade, posting net earnings of Ksh. 5.4 billion. This turnaround came after a staggering loss of Ksh. 22.6 billion in 2023.
At the center of this financial transformation was Hellen Mathuka, who served as Chief Finance Officer until September 2024. She has since taken on a new role as Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer, overseeing the airline’s future-facing initiatives.
In her interview on She Means Business, Hellen reflects on the whirlwind journey of the past year. “It’s hard to believe it’s already been almost a year in this new role,” she says, acknowledging the weight of responsibility that came with being CFO at a time when the airline was fighting to stay afloat.
She explains that the CFO position at Kenya Airways is uniquely complex. It’s not just about balancing books and boosting profits. As a state-owned entity, the airline must align with national objectives, such as advancing Kenya’s tourism agenda.
Leadership, she adds, demands clarity and discipline. “One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that cash flow is everything.”
Hellen also shares exciting developments, including the airline's recent expansion to London’s Gatwick Airport – a second direct UK route that complements the existing one through Heathrow. She offers insight into the delays behind the return of three grounded Dreamliner aircraft.
Beyond her corporate role, Hellen reveals her personal side – a love for hosting, and a dormant golf hobby she's hoping to revive. “Kenya Airways subsidizes golf lessons,” she laughs, “but somehow my gear just keeps gathering dust.”
