Kenya Power has announced that electricity consumption has hit
a new record high with a demand of 2,362 MW recorded on Wednesday, July 23,
2025.
In a statement to newsrooms, the utility company indicated a
steady growth in electricity consumption since February 2025, which had a peak
demand of 2,316 MW.
Kenya Power's Managing Director & CEO Joseph Siror
expressed confidence in the company's commitment to rolling out more
connectivity projects across the country.
“The new peak demand is a testament to our commitment to drive
national electricity access through the deployment of various electrification
projects," Siror noted.
"When we look at our electricity dispatch figures, we
realise that electricity demand has increased by 46 MW in the last five months
since February, when we had the first peak demand this year. We expect the
momentum to continue as we roll out more connectivity projects across the
country."
The surge in power demand, Siror pointed out, was mainly
driven by the prevailing cold season that led to the usage of power to heat
homes and offices.
Further, Kenya Power managed to connect 401,848 new customers
to power in line with the government's last-mile connectivity projects.
"In addition to these projects, the Company is carrying
out other connectivity projects targeting various customer categories,
including commercial and industrial consumers. We expect that the onboarding of
these customers will push electricity demand further," added Siror.
To drive the uptake of electricity consumption, Kenya Power
plans to install 45 electric vehicle chargers across six counties and also set
up four e-cooking hubs in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Kisumu.
This is expected to drive the adoption of e-cooking in mega
institutions such as schools and hotels.
