Fresh from an
impressive campaign in the Kenya Women’s Basketball Premier League, where they
finished as runners-up, Zetech Sparks have stepped up their training ahead of
their maiden appearance at the FIBA Zone Five Club Championship set for
November 8–15 in Nairobi.
The regional
tournament, which also serves as a qualifier for the Women’s Basketball League
Africa (WBLA), will feature national champions and top teams from across East
Africa battling for a spot on the continental stage.
Head coach
Maurice Obilo says preparations are in full swing, though the team has had to
contend with occasional weather disruptions due to outdoor training conditions.
“We’ve started
our preparations, though the weather has caused some interruptions since we are
training outdoors,” Obilo said. “Still, we thank God that everyone is in good
health and in high spirits. This is the first time the girls are playing at
this level, so we are focused on preparing them, encouraging them to learn,
gain experience, and give their best.”
Despite the
challenges, Obilo remains upbeat about his team’s readiness and believes they
will deliver a strong performance when the competition tips off.
“The camp is
going well. By the time we have another week of preparation, the girls will be
ready to put up a good show at that level. We are positive and continue to work
hard,” he added.
Zetech Sparks
will represent Kenya alongside reigning national champions Kenya Ports Authority
(KPA) at the Zone Five Championship, which promises thrilling action and a
showcase of the region’s finest basketball talent.
