A woman in her late 40s died last evening after an abandoned gold mining shaft collapsed on her near Nango trading center, in Bondo sub-county.

Margaret Achuth Ligondo, is reported to have sneaked into the disused pit to mine when the shaft caved in, burying her alive and killing her instantly. The site had earlier been abandoned following repeated accidents.

Confirming the incident, Assistant Chief of Uyawi Sub-location Joshua Ougo said members of the public alerted his office after retrieving the body from the collapsed shaft. He said that they rushed to the scene, only to find that the body had already been recovered.

They then called officers from Kopolo Police Post, who came and later moved the body to Bondo Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where it awaits postmortem examination.

Ougo warned artisanal miners against venturing into abandoned pits, especially during the rainy season when shafts are unstable.

The administrator further directed the owner of the abandoned mine to fence off the site to prevent unauthorized entry. He revealed that the pit has claimed at least four lives to date.
