Retired Kenyan international runner Daniel Komen has revealed why he kept his wife in the dark when he single-handedly sold their matrimonial property valued at more than Ksh. 100 million to fellow athletes among them double Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge and Brimin Kipruto.

While testifying in a case where his wife has sued him together with his fellow athletes and cereal farmer Peter Sang over ownership of the property, Komen said that he had no business to seek the consent of his wife Dr. Joyce Kimosop Komen, a senior lecturer at Moi University because the contested property belongs to him.

The disputed 220 acre of land  is located in the Southern East of Eldoret municipality in Uasin Gishu county.

Komen, a father of three told the court that he purchased the said property from a prominent farmer identified as Mzee Kwambai Chesire over two decades ago from the money he earned while competing in various international races abroad and also a loan he took from a local bank.

While recognizing the university don as his legal wife, Komen stated that she had no right to demand his consent before disposing off the multimillion shillings property  to whoever he wanted,  arguing that he was the sole owner of the said prime agricultural land.

Komen further brought to the attention of the court that despite his pleas to his wife to settle the property dispute out of court, she turned down the idea and instead opted for full trial.

He defended his fellow’s athletes and a businessman against claims by his wife that they were strangers on the said parcel of land saying they were legal purchasers of his land.
