United Opposition leaders accuse IEBC of sidelining them in election talks

A section of United Opposition leaders now say they will do whatever it takes to ensure the country gets back on the path of the rule of law and constitutionalism.

Speaking on Friday in Kibwezi West, where they attended the burial service of the late Justice Joseph Mbalu Mutava, husband to Kibwezi East MP Jessica Mbalu, led by Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Muturi and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, they used the platform to criticise the government and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The leaders accused IEBC of sidelining the opposition during a recent stakeholders’ engagement as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.

“Enzi ya roadside declarations ziliisha, ata kabla ya kubuniwa kwa Katiba....people don't expect eti unatoka tu na kuanza kusema eti Tata Chemicals toka,” Kalonzo said.

The opposition leaders also criticised the government over reported abductions in the country, saying they would work to ensure Kenyans are in safer hands after the 2027 polls.

“Recently the people of Hungary kule Uingereza walipindua serikali ya Prime Minister and the call was one, it is now or never, either tukomboe hii nchi or never,” stated Kalonzo.

Wamalwa added, “Wiki hii ya Katiba ndio tumeona kutekwa nyara kwa yule jamaa wa Standard Group, ni hii wiki pia ndio tumeona waandamanaji pia wakitupiwa teargas....Rais is not above the law tunataka taifa ibaki kwa mkondo wa kuheshimu Katiba.”

The United Opposition leadership also slammed the recent stakeholders’ engagement convened by IEBC, saying it was wrong to exclude the opposition from the meeting.

“Imekuwa 11 months, napenda kuuliza ile tume ya uchaguzi IEBC, to give effect to the ‘I’ which is Independent, for a series of engagements they have assumed the role of a department in the office of the President...including this week they have forgotten they are an independent institution, surely how can you forget to invite someone like Kalonzo, a former President and WPF leader,” said Muturi.

“Ruto anasema kila siku sisi hatuna agenda eti ni ya Wantam, awachane na yetu, aangalie agenda yake,” DCP SG John Methu added.

The leaders also praised the late Justice Mutava for his contribution to the legal sector and the administration of justice.

In Ruiru, Kiambu County, People's Party of Kenya leader Ndindi Nyoro called on Kenyans to reject the Kenya Kwanza government in the 2027 General Election.

“Wakenya wanataka investors wote wapewe heshima....Wale watu wanawekeza Kenya kama kampuni ya Tata tunataka waheshimiwe....waache kuingiliwa kwa maneno ya siasa,” Nyoro said.

The leaders said they would remain focused on their efforts to oust President William Ruto at the ballot next year.
