Two suspected gang members were fatally shot on Tuesday
night during an attempted robbery in Yala town Siaya County.
A Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer was
also injured in the confrontation.
According to the police, the two middle-aged men stormed a
shop at approximately 10:00 p.m., attempting to rob the female shopkeeper.
She raised the alarm, prompting a nearby DCI officer on
patrol from Yala Police Station to respond swiftly.
Gem Yala sub-county Police Commander, Charles Wafula, stated
that the suspects tried to flee the scene and beat the officer with a metal
rod, striking him in the chest.
In self-defence, the officer opened fire, killing both
suspects instantly.
The bodies were taken to the Yala sub-county hospital
mortuary, while the injured officer was admitted to the same facility.
“The deceased were part of a criminal gang that we have been
pursuing following a series of robberies in this area,” Mr Wafula said.
One of the suspects was identified as Charles Odhiambo
Ojwang’, alias ‘Buda’, while the identity of the second suspect is yet to be
established.
