“Tunataka Power!”: Flood Chaos Leaves Parts of Nairobi Without Electricity for Days

A number of estates in Nairobi have not had electricity since Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
Stephen Orwa, a resident of Embakasi told Wananchi Reporting that his estate has not had power for the third day running.
“I don't think this has ever happened in Nairobi. It is shameful to say the least. Kenya Power is taking too long to restore power. They were obviously not prepared,” says Orwa who works as a welder in Embakasi.
Orwa expressed concern that affected areas in Embakasi had not been listed in a customer alert Kenya Power issued on Saturday, March 7, 2026.
"It appears Kenya Power has no idea how many estates are in dark after the recent floods," said Orwa.
Some of the known affected estates in Embakasi include Nyamavilla estate, sections of Kayole, Nasra, Sossian estate, sections of Umoja, Bee Centre and other surrounding areas.
The extended blackout has resulted in water shortage – as landlords are unable to pump water for use by tenants.
“I have had to buy water from vendors, which is not only expensive, but also likely to pose health risk to my household. It is hard to tell where these vendors collect water during this time of heavy rains and flooding. They could just collect any water, you never really know,” says Miriam Nasinya, a resident of Embakasi.
A number of restaurants, pubs, hotels, barber shops, butcheries and other businesses that rely on electricity have had to either close, or resort to using generators, which is quite expensive.
Kenya Power on Saturday, March 7, 2026, issued a customer alert explaining the power disruption, blaming it on the rains. The distributor noted that the recent floods had affected the South C substation, and works were underway to restore power.
It lso announced planned power interruptions in seven counties on Sunday, March 8, affecting parts of Nairobi, Machakos, Uasin Gishu, Vihiga, Kakamega, Kisumu and Laikipia.
