Kenyan transport stakeholders have raised concerns over the recently launched automated Instant Fines Traffic Management System by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

While the system aims to improve transparency and efficiency by notifying drivers of traffic violations instantly via SMS, representatives from the Federation of Public Transport Sector (FPTS) and the Motorist Association of Kenya (MAK) have voiced reservations about its implementation.

In official statements, FPTS highlighted worries over potential errors in violation notices and the adequacy of the system’s capacity to handle the high volume of traffic data.

They argued that inaccuracies could unfairly penalise drivers and undermine trust in the new technology.

Similarly, MAK raised concerns about the clarity of procedures for contesting fines and the possibility of system glitches that might lead to unjust penalties.

Both associations called for comprehensive public education campaigns and robust mechanisms for drivers to challenge notices before fines are enforced.

They also urged NTSA to ensure transparency in the operation of enforcement cameras and to provide clear guidelines on driver and vehicle owner responsibilities.

This comes as NTSA launched the automated Instant Fines Traffic Management System in efforts to tame traffic offences.

As part of the system to improve transparency and efficiency, Kenyan drivers will now receive instantaneous SMS notices of traffic violations.

Under the directive, all fines issued through the system shall be paid through the branch network of KCB Group within 7 days.

NTSA cautioned that there would be additional interest on the amount owed if the fines were not paid within the allocated time.
