County officials said the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to mitigate flooding ahead of the expected rains.
According to the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Environment, Energy, Climate Change, Natural Resources, Water, and Irrigation, James Mutugi, who led the operation, the exercise targets all major towns in the county. It involves the excavation and clearance of drains, restoration of natural waterways, and public sensitization on flood risks.
The operation, which began early in Kagio town, brought together business community leaders, enforcement officers, and police. Structures built on or along drainage systems were demolished.
“These illegal structures have been the main cause of perennial flooding witnessed in the town during the rainy season,” Mutugi said.
He added that despite the County Government issuing vacation notices to traders occupying drainage areas, some failed to comply before the deadline expired.
“During the rains, Kagio town experiences heavy flooding, which is why we are taking action to remove these structures,” he said.
Mutugi further noted that the decision to remove the illegal stalls followed consultations between the County Government and the Kagio business community.
“We are cautioning property owners against connecting their sewer lines to stormwater drainage systems. These drains are exclusively meant for rainwater,” he emphasized.
