Kenyan rally driver Tinashe Gatimu on Thursday officially unveiled her new Ford Fiesta R2, a more powerful rally car than the ones she previously competed with, as she prepares for the Safari Rally Kenya of the World Rally Championship scheduled for March 12–15 in Naivasha.

The unveiling took place at a Nairobi hotel, drawing motorsport stakeholders and rally enthusiasts eager to witness the next step in Gatimu’s promising career.

The 21-year-old driver will once again be navigated by her mother, Caroline Gatimu, forming a rare mother-daughter crew as they prepare to tackle one of the most demanding rallies on the World Rally Championship calendar.

Backed by KCB Bank Kenya, Gatimu will be part of a strong contingent of Kenyan drivers looking to test themselves against some of the world’s top rally competitors during the iconic event.

Tinashe, who has been racing for five years, acknowledged the challenges posed by the Safari Rally, emphasizing that her primary goal remains completing the grueling course.

“This year the aim remains the same as in previous years — first of all, to finish. Rallying can be tough, and getting to the podium in itself is an achievement,” she said.

“In the rally car we trust each other, especially because I have known her all my life. She has also been a rally driver for a long time,” she added, referring to her mother.

Navigator Caroline Gatimu described the moment as special, calling it “a very exciting experience.” She said she has full confidence in her daughter behind the wheel and emphasized the importance of endurance and teamwork in rallying, where simply finishing the race is often a major accomplishment.

The Ford Fiesta R2, which offers improved performance and durability compared to the team’s previous cars, is built to handle the grueling terrain and unpredictable conditions that have made the Safari Rally famous.

Beyond the WRC Safari Rally, the Gatimu crew also plans to compete in the African Rally Championship this year as they seek to gain more experience and exposure on the continental stage.

The Safari Rally remains one of the most demanding and celebrated events in global rallying, attracting elite drivers from around the world while providing a stage for Kenya’s rising stars to prove themselves.
