Three women have been arrested in Migori Township after detectives recovered 55 bags of government-subsidised fertiliser allegedly being sold in breach of regulations governing the distribution of the farm input.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the arrests followed a tip-off from members of the public, which led detectives from Suna East to Apida area in Suna Central Location.

Upon arrival, the officers reportedly found the fertiliser, marked “NOT FOR SALE,” being offered for sale, raising suspicions of the illegal diversion of a commodity intended to support farmers.

The suspects, identified as Esther Mwera, Emily Akinyi and Elizabeth Kisili, were subsequently questioned and reportedly led detectives to their respective stores.

A search of the premises resulted in the recovery of 55 bags of the subsidised fertiliser, which were seized as exhibits as investigations into the alleged offence continue.

The three women were escorted to Migori Police Station alongside the recovered fertiliser and booked pending further police action.

The DCI has praised members of the public for providing timely information that enables law enforcement officers to identify and investigate suspected criminal activities.

The agency has encouraged Kenyans to continue reporting suspicious activities, particularly those involving the illegal sale or diversion of government resources.

Government-subsidised fertiliser is intended to help farmers reduce production costs, improve agricultural productivity and strengthen food security. Its illegal diversion and sale can undermine these objectives by denying intended beneficiaries access to affordable farm inputs.
