The national field hockey women's team began their Africa Cup of Nations (ACN) competition in high spirits with a 1-0 victory against Nigeria on Saturday in Ismailia, Egypt.
The match was full of good field hockey and exciting
goalmouth action but Nigeria simply could not find a way past the Kenyan
defence.
Lakers attacking midfielder Alice Owiti lone goal was enough
for Kenya to set the bar, five minutes into the last period.
The first two periods were full of actions with every coach
trying to seal the loopholes against the opponent leading to a barren draw at
halftime.
During the third quarter, Meshack Senge coached side did not
hesitate to clutch his defense.
Nigeria had it tough in the last ten minutes to the final
whistle trying to defend the stinging Tausi (Kenya) flicks as well as passing
past Rachael Kamala (Strathmore) strategic defense.
The results set Kenya on the standings apex with three
points. They face defending champions South Africa with Nigeria eyeing for
points against Ghana tomorrow.
