Joshua Mutui Muimi has been  arraigned in a court this morning after being arrested for allegedly impersonating Kenya Defence Forces officer and running a fake military recruitment scheme.

The prosecution is seeking to have him detained for seven days to allow investigators to complete their inquiries.

Police told the court that Muimi was arrested yesterday while allegedly posing as a KDF officer and issuing calling letters purportedly from the Ministry of Defence, directing Kenyans to report for a supposed recruitment training in Eldoret on November 17.

At the time of his arrest, Muimi was reportedly dressed in full Kenya Air Force uniform with a name tag.

Court was told that a  search conducted by police recovered several documents including Ministry of Defence–branded papers, six admission letters, seven calling letters, seven fingerprint forms, and KCSE certificates belonging to victims.

The items were found in a motor vehicle linked to him.

Investigators now want to submit the recovered documents and the military regalia to the Ministry of Defence to verify their authenticity.

They also intend to trace and record statements from Kenyans who were allegedly contacted to collect the admission letters.

Police further noted that Muimi was arrested in a serviced apartment he had temporarily rented and that his permanent residence is unknown, making him a potential flight risk.

In his defence, Muimi told the court that this was his first time being arrested.

He requested to be released on cash bail, saying he is willing to cooperate with investigators.

He claimed he previously served in the military and left in 2018, adding that the uniform he was found wearing was his original kit from service.

He also insisted that the papers recovered from him were blank and that he had not received any money from members of the public.

The court is expected to deliver its ruling on the prosecution’s request.
