Jackson Keiwua — identified by prosecutors as the victim’s ex-husband — was arrested on Friday on allegations that he directed the woman’s brothers to attack her after claiming he had already paid her dowry.
He faces charges that include intent to abduct and unlawfully confine Millicent Semeta Rotiken at his residence.
Police said four additional suspects, who are reportedly the victim’s brothers, remain at large. A manhunt is under way as investigators seek to apprehend them.
The incident has provoked national outrage and prompted a visit to Narok County by Gender Cabinet Secretary Hanna Cheptumo, who condemned the attack during her tour.
CS Cheptumo warned that those responsible would be held to account and emphasised that no cultural practice supersedes the Constitution.
“Although it is culture, it is not the type allowed in the Constitution… we say no,” she told reporters.
Rebecca Tonkei, Narok Woman Representative, pledged that authorities would pursue the matter. “We are not going to let this go because it is the second happening — the lady has the right to choose,” she said.
Police have not yet reported any arrests among the four men being sought.
