Harambee Starlets goalkeepers Annedy Kundu and Vivian Shiyonzo are ready to give everything to help Kenya qualify for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), in the crucial two-legged tie against The Gambia later this month.

Kundu, who features for Kenya Police Bullets, believes there will be a huge demand on the goalkeeping department in the matches, if Starlets are to sail through.

The duo, part of a four-player goalkeeping unit that also includes Lilian Awuor and Mercy Akoth, were named in head coach Beldine Odemba’s 38-player provisional squad unveiled last week.

Speaking after Wednesday’s training session at the Mpesa Foundation, Kundu, who turns out for Kenya Police Bullets, expressed pride in representing the nation, noting that her inclusion reflects years of consistency and discipline.

“It is a big achievement,” Kundu said. “Playing for the Harambee Starlets is not easy—many players dream of wearing the Kenyan flag. I thank God that I am here, and I would encourage others to keep pushing for their chance.”

Shiyonzo, who features for Kibera Women's and is the last season's FKF Women’s Cup Golden Glove Winner, echoed Kundu’s sentiments, saying the team is ready to deliver.

“We are ready to fight,” she said. “The mood in camp is great, and the players are united not to let Kenya down.”

For the youthful shot-stopper, the call-up represents both personal pride and national duty.

“I am so happy to be here,” she added. “I’m representing my country, my family, and myself. People appreciate how I play and make saves—it motivates me to keep improving.”

Kenya is set to host the first leg in Nairobi on Friday, October 24, before travelling to Thiès, Senegal, for the return fixture at Stade Lat Dior on October 28.

The Gambia will play their “home” tie away due to the absence of a CAF-approved venue.

Head coach Odemba has maintained a blend of experience and emerging talent in her squad as Kenya targets a return to Africa’s biggest stage for women’s football.

The Starlets, who last graced the WAFCON in 2016, are aiming to make a strong comeback, with the goalkeeping department expected to be a key pillar in their qualification campaign.
