Harambee Starlets and Vihiga Queens midfielder Martha Amunyolete is confident they will win their two international friendly matches set for Algiers, this week, against the hosts.
The
former Trans Nzoia Falcons player said though it will not be a walk in the
park, she expects the good training they have had, will propel them to greatness
against the Algerian national team.
“We are going there to give our best and to
come back with a positive result. Personally, I will give my best to ensure
that we come back with a positive result, so as not to disappoint our fans,”
Amunyolet
has been lethal for the four time Kenyan Women Premier League Champions Vihiga
Queens this term, banging in eight goals in five games, including a five-goal
haul against Kisped Queens on November 2.
She also
scored twice against Bungoma Queens as well as against Kibera Soccer Women.
Starlets
will be using the two friendly matches as preparations for next year’s Women’s
Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) .the Starlets booked the ticket after thrashing
the Gambia 4-1 on aggregate.
Elsewhere
midfielder Medina Abubakar of Kenya Police echoed the confidence in camp and
encouraged fans to keep supporting the team.
“We’ve
prepared well and the mood is good. We want our supporters to rally behind us,
whether they’re watching from home or following online,” she said.
The team
departed for Algiers Saturday evening ahead of their first match on Wednesday,
November 26, with the second fixture set for Sunday, November 30.
With
young standouts like Amunyolet and Abubakar leading the way, the Starlets hope
to use these matches as a launch pad towards a strong WAFCON campaign and to
show Africa that Kenya’s next generation of women footballers has truly
arrived.
