Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi has defended the planned exhibition match between Bayern Munich and Ajax, insisting that private sponsors will finance the event scheduled to inaugurate the Raila Odinga International Stadium on January 5, 2027.

Mwangi says the government will not spend public funds to bring the two European football giants to Kenya, amid public debate over the cost of hosting the clubs.

“The government of Kenya has not contributed towards the match. We have strategic partners who have come on board, and we are supporting them to market Kenya. From our analysis, we will have surplus from the event, which will go towards assisting us with preparations for AFCON 2027,” Mwangi said.

He, however, did not disclose the identity of the sponsor or the total cost of hosting the clubs.

The Sports PS says the 60,000-seater stadium, built to international standards, is expected to deliver wider economic and sporting benefits beyond the inaugural fixture.

He says the event will boost tourism, stimulate business in Nairobi and neighboring counties, and provide opportunities to showcase Kenyan football talent on the international stage.

Mwangi also believes the involvement of the two clubs will help expose local players and teams to international football standards.,

“Our Kenyan players will have an opportunity to be picked to also enable them to participate at an international level,” added Mwangi.

The January 5 fixture comes as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania, with the new stadium expected to play a key role in the continental tournament.
