Spiro expands EV battery network to accelerate Kenya's e-mobility transition

The new facility in Westlands, Nairobi, can simultaneously charge and house more than 200 batteries and will operate 24 hours a day, providing riders with uninterrupted access to fully charged batteries.

The company says the station has surplus capacity to support Nairobi's growing electric mobility ecosystem while reducing downtime and increasing riders' earnings.

Speaking during the launch, Spiro Kenya Country Head Vishal Mittal said the company's strategy is to make electric mobility affordable while building the energy infrastructure needed for widespread adoption.

"Our mission is to put more savings in our riders' pockets, create a cleaner and greener transport system, and expand the energy network that makes both possible," Mittal said.

He said the station guarantees riders reliable access to energy at all times.

"For riders, reliability is everything. Our Mega Station has been designed to ensure that fully charged batteries are always available, day or night. This investment gives riders peace of mind, minimizes downtime and enables them to focus on earning more," he said.

Mittal said Spiro has expanded operations to 37 counties, with battery swap stations located five to 10 kilometres apart in urban areas, while fast chargers are planned along major highways to support long-distance travel.

He attributed the growing uptake of electric motorcycles to lower ownership costs, noting that financing is available through partners including Equity Bank, Mogo and Watu.

"The bike is cheaper to buy, cheaper to run and cheaper to maintain. Electric motorcycles have fewer than 200 components compared to between 500 and 1,000 in petrol bikes, reducing maintenance costs by up to 40 per cent," he said.

Spiro plans to increase the number of mega battery stations from one to 30 by the end of the year.

Spiro's Head of Energy Network, Amit Rao said the Bishan Mega Station demonstrates the company's strategy of building high-capacity energy infrastructure to accelerate electric mobility.

"By concentrating significant battery capacity in strategic locations, we can ensure riders have reliable access to energy around the clock and create the infrastructure needed to support the next phase of growth in electric mobility," Rao said.
