Former Citizen TV news anchor Yvonne Okwara has landed a new role at Shuga Global, barely 24 hours after announcing that she was bringing the curtain down on her journalism career spanning two decades.

Okwara has been appointed Head of Investments and Partnerships at the organisation, marking her transition from the newsroom to the world of strategic investments, fundraising and development partnerships.

Shuga Global announced her appointment on Wednesday, October 28, describing the veteran journalist as a seasoned communications professional whose experience extends beyond television journalism into corporate communications, fundraising and government relations.

"Shuga Global understands that our communities need opportunities for expanded reach beyond grant-dependency. This is why we are beyond excited to introduce our new Head of Investments and Partnerships, Yvonne Okwara," the organisation announced.

In her new position, Okwara will be responsible for building strategic partnerships, attracting investment and mobilising resources to support the organisation's programmes targeting young people.

Her appointment comes at a time when Shuga Global is undergoing a rebranding exercise and seeking to expand its international presence, with a particular focus on reducing reliance on traditional grant funding.

The organisation said Okwara's experience in business, policy and social impact would be instrumental in securing new funding opportunities and strengthening its long-term financial sustainability.

"As Shuga Global rebrands and expands its worldwide reach, Yvonne will leverage her expertise in business, policy, and social impact to build strategic relationships, unlock funding, and mobilize resources," Shuga Global stated.

The organisation further credited Okwara with contributing to significant transformations in Kenya's media landscape, while highlighting her involvement in development partnerships that have impacted communities across different regions.

Her appointment comes just a day after she announced her departure from journalism, ending a career that saw her rise to become one of Kenya's most prominent television news personalities.

During her time at Citizen TV, Okwara became a familiar face to audiences through her news presentation, political interviews and discussions on national affairs, establishing a reputation for her incisive questioning and authoritative delivery.

Her exit from the media industry, announced on Tuesday, October 27, marked the end of a 20-year journey in broadcast journalism.

The latest appointment now places her on the other side of the public affairs landscape, moving from interrogating policy decisions and national development issues on television to helping shape partnerships and mobilise resources for social impact initiatives.

For Shuga Global, the appointment forms part of a broader effort to sustain its two-decade mission of empowering young people while positioning itself for further growth beyond traditional donor funding.
