Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) has intensified its empowerment programs in Migori County, reaching thousands of residents through water, youth, and business initiatives.

The organisation, which operates through its Shofco Urban Network (SUN) movement, now has over 42,000 members in Migori and 6.2 million nationwide. The programs focus on promoting self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihoods.

To tackle Migori’s persistent water challenges, SHOFCO has desilted and rehabilitated 23 water pans across the county. The initiative aims to improve access to clean water while supporting fish farming and small-scale irrigation.

SHOFCO Founder and CEO Dr Kennedy Odede said the organisation’s work is guided by a community-driven approach.

“Real change begins when communities take charge of their own destiny. In Migori, we see people coming together to build a dignified and inclusive future,” said Dr. Odede during SUN elections in the county on Wednesday.

So far, SHOFCO’s youth empowerment programs have reached more than 44,000 young people in Migori through business and advocacy training, helping them build leadership and entrepreneurship skills. The organisation has also supported 700 small businesses with funding to boost local enterprise recovery and growth.

Additionally, more than 200 youth have enrolled in vocational training programs in fields such as tailoring, mechanics, ICT, and construction, while 2,000 others have received seed capital to start their own ventures. Dr Odede announced plans to provide business grants to an additional 1,000 youth in 2026.

Migori Deputy Governor Dr Joseph Mahiri commended SHOFCO’s partnership approach, describing it as an example of how collaboration between government and community organizations can advance local development.

“The partnership between SHOFCO and Migori County shows that sustainable development works best when it’s co-created with the people,” said Dr Mahiri.

South Sakwa MCA and County Assembly Majority Leader Edward Ouma Ooro noted that the initiatives have created new opportunities for young people.

“Our youth are now taking charge of their economic future. These programs are helping families achieve greater stability,” he said.

Former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo, who attended the SUN election, said SHOFCO’s expansion into counties like Migori reflects its growing national footprint.

“It’s encouraging to see community-driven initiatives like SHOFCO extend beyond urban areas to reach rural communities,” said Gumbo.

The SUN elections brought together representatives from all wards in Migori, with elected leaders expected to act as liaisons between the community and SHOFCO to align development priorities with local needs.

Founded by Dr Odede, who grew up in Nairobi’s Kibera settlement, SHOFCO now operates in 40 counties and serves over 4.1 million people through clean water, education, healthcare, and economic empowerment programs.

Dr Odede has received several international recognitions, including the 2025 UN Nelson Mandela Prize and inclusion in Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
