Police in Mbale, Vihiga County, have launched investigations
into the circumstances surrounding the discovery of two bodies inside a septic
tank, a few metres from Mbale Police Station.
The grim discovery of the two bodies sparked widespread fear and
raised serious concerns about public safety among residents, with shocked
residents flocking to the scene to witness the incident.
One family has since come forward to positively identify one
of the bodies as that of their kin who had been reported missing several weeks
ago.
The family of Humphrey Baranga is now demanding answers over
the circumstances surrounding his disappearance on December 24.
“Hatukuwa tumejua amekuwa hapo lakini harufu ilikuwa
inaskika… tunataka serikali itusaidie kwa sababu ni uchungu,” said the deceased’s
mother, Jane Kasigane.
The brother of the deceased, David Kagahi, added; “Tumekuwa
tukimtafuta hadi wa leo tunaambiwa ako kwa shimo ya takataka.”
The second body, that of a woman, was found in an advanced
state of decomposition, prompting speculation from residents that it may have been
dumped a while back.
“Tulipata habari kwa wananchi kwamba kuna miili kwa
septic tank, tukajulisha asasi za usalama kuweza kutoa hiyo miili,” Mbihi
Assistant Chief Alex Omenda stated.
Edward Sogomi, a resident, said, “We are calling
upon security apparatus to assist us so that we can fish out the people trying
to commit heinous acts.”
The incident has also raised questions over how such a crime
could occur just a short distance from a police station without being detected.
“Ni jambo ambalo imetupatia mshangao na mshtuko kabisa,
inamaanisha security ya hii area iko na shida,” another resident, Beatrice
Chegu noted.
The bodies have been transferred to the Vihiga County
Referral Hospital mortuary as police intensify investigations into the
incident.
