Police in Kirinyaga County are investigating the death of a 44-year-old man whose body was found in a cattle dung pit a week after he went missing.

The body of Anthony Njeru Murage was discovered on Monday evening at a homestead in Gatumbi, Ngariama Ward, Gichugu Constituency.

His brother, Francis Mwaniki Murage, said the family had been searching for him since he went missing on Tuesday last week.

According to Mwaniki, a worker at the homestead spotted what appeared to be a piece of cloth floating in the pit. A closer look revealed a human body submerged in the waste.

Detectives from Gichugu Sub-County retrieved the body and took it to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Residents of Gatumbi and neighbouring Kamwana village, led by Caroline Njoki and Eliud Muriithi, urged police to establish how Murage’s body ended up at the homestead, which they said was occupied only by workers.

Police said investigations were underway to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
