The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in Homa Bay County has issued a stern warning to Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, demanding that he takes responsibility for remarks they say are insensitive and capable of fueling ethnic hatred and national tension.
Speaking on behalf of the party, UDA Homa Bay County Secretary
Silas Jakakimba said the country is still grieving the loss of former Prime
Minister Raila Odinga, a man he described as “the father of democracy and a
unifying force across Kenya.”
“Kenya is in mourning. The passing of Raila Odinga is not a
Luo loss, not an ODM loss, but a national loss. Baba was a statesman whose
sacrifices shaped our democracy. In such a moment, leaders are called to
protect unity — not provoke pain, “Kahiga's words are careless and dangerous,”
Jakakimba said.
Jakakimba condemned Governor Kahiga’s recent statements as
careless, insensitive, and recklessly divisive, especially during a period of
national sorrow.
“This is not about party politics. It is about respect,
decency, and responsible leadership,” he emphasized.
He called on political leaders to emulate the late Raila
Odinga, whom he praised for his ability to forgive, reconcile, and even sit
with his fiercest critics in the interest of national unity.
Jakakimba stressed that UDA is a national party built on unity
and peaceful coexistence, not on exploiting tragedy for political gains.
“Leaders can disagree politically, but they must never
dishonor Raila Odinga’s contribution to this nation,” he added.
“Governor Kahiga must reflect deeply. Leadership is not a license
for arrogance. Public office demands humility — especially when the nation is
mourning. An apology to the Odinga family and to Kenyans is not weakness, but
wisdom.”
To the youth across all communities — Luo, Kikuyu, Kalenjin,
Luhya, Somali and others — Jakakimba issued a rallying call:
“This is your moment to rise above tribal politics. Reject
leaders who thrive on chaos. Support those who build bridges, not bonfires.”
He also urged members of UDA and leaders across political
divides to honor Raila Odinga not through conflict, but by upholding the values
he stood for — democracy, justice, peace, and national unity.
