Relief for Yatta residents as DP Kindiki opens Kithimani Land Registry

Thousands of residents of Kithimani and the larger Yatta Sub-county are set to benefit from easier access to land services following the official opening of the Kithimani Land Registry by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Wednesday.

The new registry is expected to bring land administration services closer to residents, ending years of travel to Machakos town for services such as land registration, searches and transfers.

During the event, Kindiki, accompanied by Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome and Lands and Physical Planning Principal Secretary Generali Nixon Korir, also issued 1,300 title deeds to local residents.

Residents had previously travelled to Machakos town to access land services, with many spending more than KSh1,000 on transport for a single visit.

Kindiki said the opening of the registry is part of the government's efforts to decentralise public services and improve access to land administration.

"No Kenyan should travel long distances or incur unnecessary costs to access essential land services. We are making land administration more accessible, efficient and people-centred," he said.

According to the Ministry of Lands, the Kithimani Land Registry will serve about 235,000 land parcels, with all land records for the area now maintained locally.

Wahome said the registry has begun operations with 19 officers, with plans to deploy 11 more to meet increasing demand. The facility will also administer 19 adjudication sections and 17 settlement schemes.

She said bringing land services closer to residents is expected to improve efficiency, enhance the security of land records and reduce the time taken to access services.

Korir said decentralising land administration remains a key priority for the ministry, adding that the government is also accelerating the issuance of title deeds and expanding access to land services across the country.

Yatta MP Robert Basil Ngui welcomed the opening of the registry, saying it would save residents time and transport costs while supporting economic activity in the area.

One of the beneficiaries, Gregory Mulwa, who received a title deed during the event, said the new registry would spare residents the long journeys previously required to access land services.

The Kithimani Land Registry is part of the government's programme to establish land registries closer to communities. Over the past year, similar facilities have been opened in Malindi, Mogotio, Kamwangi and Ol Kalou as part of broader reforms that also include the digitisation of land records through the Ardhisasa platform and the accelerated issuance of title deeds.
