Nzoia Sugar FC
have turned the Football Kenya Federation’s (FKF) week-long suspension of
league matches into an opportunity to rebuild momentum and fine-tune their
tactics ahead of the forthcoming National Super League fixtures.
The pause in league action, announced as
a mark of respect for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has allowed
clubs across the country a brief period of reflection and recalibration.
According to head coach Charles Odero,
Nzoia are taking full advantage of the break by organizing a series of friendly
matches aimed at enhancing fitness levels and correcting tactical errors
observed in their recent outings.
Odero emphasized that the friendlies are not just for maintaining match sharpness but also for addressing key weaknesses identified in both attack and defence.
“This
break has come at a good time for us. It gives us space to refine our game, fix
a few mistakes, and get the players mentally ready for the upcoming fixtures,”
Odero said.
Despite their promising performances,
Nzoia have found it difficult to secure wins away from home. Their recent
fixtures ended in a 2-2 draw against Mwatate United and a goalless stalemate
with Fortune Sacco, results that Odero admits were below expectations.
“We’ve been performing decently but haven’t translated that into wins, especially
in away matches. It’s
something we’re working hard to improve,” he added.
Currently, Nzoia sit seventh on the table
with five points from three matches, showcasing a balanced start to their
campaign. Their focus now shifts to their next home fixture at Sudi Stadium in
Bungoma County, where they will face Talanta FC, who are just behind them in
tenth place with four points.
