Medical Services Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga on Monday returned to the burial site of the late Raila Odinga, where together with his wife they laid a wreath of flowers.

PS Oluga was among a host of other people marking Mashujaa Day by honouring the late former Kenyan premier, who was laid to rest on Sunday besides his late father Jaramogi Oginga.

During the visit, Oluga's wife Mercy Jelimo was overtaken by emotions, with her husband embracing her as they paid their respects to the departed Odinga.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta also returned to the gravesite on Monday accompanied by Raila's elder brother Oburu Oginga, where he said a word of prayer before visiting Mama Idah Odinga at her home in Bondo.

Raila was laid to rest on Sunday in a televised state funeral, where every speaker and mourner talked highly of him.

He is highly regarded as the father of democracy in Kenya, having endured torture and detention, and even living in exile while fighting for multi-partism.

Raila also unsuccessfully vied for the presidency five times, but he remained the core part of Kenyan politics even outside government.

On Monday during the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui, President William Ruto honoured him with the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H), the highest honour in Kenya.

A gazette notice dated October 20, 2025, confirmed the conferment of the First Class C.G.H honour to Raila, recognising him for exemplified courage, endurance, dedication, an unwavering commitment to the ideals of democracy and good governance, sacrifice, Pan-Africanism and faithful service to all of humanity.
