State Department for Medical Services Principal Secretary, Dr. Ouma Oluga, has joined Kenyans and the international community in mourning the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a revered statesman, visionary leader, and tireless defender of democracy and social justice.

Dr Oluga hailed the late Odinga as a true patriot whose life embodied service, courage, and unwavering commitment to the nation, noting that his decades-long struggle for freedom, equity, and good governance left an indelible mark on Kenya’s history.

“Rt. Hon. Odinga’s leadership transcended politics, inspiring hope among millions and shaping the course of Kenya’s democratic and socio-economic transformation,” said Dr Oluga. “His devotion to inclusivity, peace, and national cohesion remains an enduring example of selfless leadership.”

He added that Odinga’s voice of conscience and conviction consistently challenged the nation to pursue justice, equality, and shared prosperity.

“Kenya has lost a true patriot whose vision and integrity will continue to guide future generations,” Dr. Oluga said, extending his heartfelt condolences to Mama Ida Odinga, the Odinga family, friends, and all Kenyans on behalf of the State Department for Medical Services and the entire health fraternity.

In honour of the late leader, Dr Oluga also announced the mobilization of 36 ambulances to provide emergency medical coverage during the reception of Rt. Hon. Odinga’s body at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on October 16, 2025.

According to the PS, each ambulance is fully equipped with Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) facilities, and staffed with a paramedic, nurse, and driver to ensure efficient on-site emergency response and safe evacuation when required.

The ambulances have been deployed from Kenya Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, Nairobi Disaster Service, Nairobi Emergency Services, and Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), with a Port Health ambulance also on standby at JKIA to offer supplementary medical support and coordinate with other responding teams.

Dr. Oluga further revealed that mobilization efforts are ongoing to ensure comprehensive emergency medical coverage in Kisumu and Siaya Counties as national arrangements continue.
