The Principal Secretary for the State Department of Sports, Elijah Mwangi, has reaffirmed the government’s dedication to transforming Kenya’s sporting landscape through major infrastructural projects and stronger partnerships with the private sector.

Speaking during the media launch of the 10th edition of the Chemususu Dam Half Marathon, Mwangi emphasized that President William Ruto’s administration is keen on ensuring every county — and eventually every constituency — has a functional sports facility.

“Right now, under the leadership of His Excellency President Ruto, we have agreed to construct almost a stadium in each constituency, beginning with counties,” said Mwangi. “In Baringo, the President directed that we take over the local stadium in partnership with the Ministry of Defence.”

He highlighted several ongoing projects, including Kamariny Stadium in Elgeyo Marakwet, Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Uasin Gishu, Nandi Stadium, and Kaptagat Stadium in Kericho, with plans to also rehabilitate facilities in Bomet and other counties.

“Our goal is to ensure that we have the right infrastructure to support athletes from all regions — giving them facilities where they can train, compete, and shine,” Mwangi added.

The PS also used the occasion to appeal to the private sector and corporate organizations to complement government efforts by sponsoring and investing in local sports initiatives.

“We are inviting sponsors — be it in athletics, volleyball, football, or boxing — to come on board and support sports development,” he said. “The government cannot do it alone. That’s why we are working with corporate partners to enhance transparency, accountability, and ensure funds reach the intended disciplines.”

Mwangi further encouraged companies to take advantage of tax rebate provisions available to corporate sponsors, noting that few have utilized this incentive to support sports growth.

His remarks come as Kenya ramps up preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the country will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

The Talanta Sports City remains the administration’s flagship project, symbolizing Kenya’s renewed focus on modern sports infrastructure.

Mwangi concluded by emphasizing that such investments will help nurture talent, boost economic growth, and position Kenya as Africa’s sporting powerhouse.
