Police in Kisumu Central sub-county are holding a 21-year-old suspected armed robber following an early morning shootout within the CBD, where an AK-47 rifle was recovered.

Police who were on patrol along Otieno Oyoo Street heard a gunshot sound and responded instantly. On location, they found the suspect had raided a home with the intention of committing a crime.

Kisumu Central Deputy Police Boss Bakari Mwanauli says the suspect, identified as Kelvin Oduor alias Kevo, then fired a shot at the officers, prompting an exchange of fire.

He says the suspect had already tied up a night guard at the premises and taken away his mobile phone as he planned to commit the robbery offence.

He says the suspect then rushed into a compound and climbed to the ceiling, where he hid himself inside a water tank on the roof of Patel Sarmaj building.

Bakari says officers managed to flush out and subdue the suspect.

He says upon search, they managed to recover an AK-47 rifle, serial number 94883, loaded with a magazine of rounds, adding that a spent cartridge was also found at the scene.

Bakari says the suspect is being held at the Kisumu central police station and will be arraigned in court.
