Kibra MP
Peter Orero has come under sharp criticism after a road rage incident involving
CNN International Correspondent Larry Madowo was caught on camera.
In a video
which has since gone viral, and which has sparked widespread outrage, the ODM
lawmaker is seen in a vehicle being driven on the wrong side of the road.
The car
carrying Madowo, which was on the correct lane, refused to make way for the
MP’s vehicle, triggering a tense exchange between the two sides.
At that
juncture, Madowo pulled out his phone to record the incident but upon noticing
this, Orero, seated in the passenger seat, lashed out at the journalist.
“Take [that
video] to President William Ruto,” Orero and his driver could be heard saying
during the altercation.
The
provocation sparked a heated - but brief - back-and-forth between the two.
Madowo,
visibly unfazed, responded sharply: “Okay, I will take it to Ruto, that’s the
only thing that you are afraid of?”
The MP’s
vehicle then drove off as the driver hurled insults at Madowo.
"Peleka
kabisa! Takataka!" he yells.
Many social
media users expressed their displeasure over the terse conduct of the
legislator, describing it as reckless and unbecoming of a public leader.
"That
is an MP, a Kenyan leader. Kenyans have every reason to be worried,"
Chrispory Ker commented on X.
Naomi
Kingola added, "A whole MP? Is he not supposed to lead by example? Now I
am convinced why Gen Z can never trust these leaders! I sigh."
Monicah
Njagi echoed similar sentiments, lamenting the disregard for public safety.
"Not
even a thought of how many Kenyan lives they have endangered with such. Who
will deliver us?" she wrote.
The
Motorists Association of Kenya also reacted, saying: "We echo CNN’s
@LarryMadowo’s concern over the reckless GOK driver. We demand the immediate
arrest & prosecution of the driver to deter similar misconduct. Carrying a
VIP requires humility - not arrogance. Taxpayers fund your salary."
"Unless
it is now government policy for official drivers to speed toward oncoming
traffic, we expect swift action. We equally condemn the Kibra MP for condoning
such law-breaking. Leaders must lead by example."
Some social
media users, who understood the legislator's past a little too well, also came
online to share tidbits of his past tenure as a no-nonsense teacher.
Laywer
James Wanjeri wrote: "The passenger used to slap us unprovoked when he
found you outside during preps. Yes, Mwalimu is now an MP and I am surprised to
see he can break the law like this considering he was the discipline master.
Some animals are more equal than others."
Chris
Sambu, a journalist, also reacted, saying, "That's kibra MP... Hon Mwalimu
Peter Orero. A very disciplined teacher who joined politics and now represents
impunity and arrogance!"
Yet another
disappointed former student said: "Co-Driver is Orero, he used to be our
deputy principal back in UpperHill School... He's going against everything he
tried to teach us in high-school. How are his former students supposed to feel
after seeing this? Also, how did a man who upheld utmost discipline as a
teacher suddenly become such a powerful rogue? Strange!"
Madowo's
strict adherence to traffic rules didn't begin yesterday. Back in January, he
again had a terse exchange with a matatu driver who was using the wrong lane -
and received a quick tongue lashing for his actions.
In the
video, the matatu could be seen reversing before moving to the right side of
the road, as Larry recorded the driver and as the matatu passed Larry's car,
the driver could be heard insulting Larry for not doing him a solid.
"'Pesa
kidogo isikupatie kiburi,' a matatu driver told me yesterday," Larry
wrote. "'Hata ukifunga, barabara ni kubwa!' I block overlapping drivers
when I drive in Nairobi. They’re almost always abusive."
