Tension has been high in Asayi Sub-location, Gem Yala Sub-county, where frustrated residents have taken to the streets to protest a power blackout that has plunged the area into darkness for more than seven months.

Led by community members Michael Opiyo and Jackline Okumu, the residents accused Kenya Power of neglect after a transformer serving the area broke down in March and was taken away for repairs but has never been replaced.

According to the residents, life and business in Asayi have come to a standstill. Shops, schools, and local enterprises have been forced to operate under difficult conditions, with many relying on costly generators or closing altogether.

“We feel abandoned. Kenya Power promised to fix the problem, but seven months later, nothing has been done,” said Opiyo during the protest at Asayi Trading Centre.

The residents are now calling on Kenya Power to urgently restore electricity to the area, saying their repeated attempts to follow up on the issue have yielded no response.

Kenya Power was unavailable for comment by the time of publication of this article.
