OPINION: Tusker should go for dominance against Al Ahli despite away goals edge

The first leg in Kigali ended 2-2, but the result does not tell the whole story. Tusker had built a two-goal advantage before the Sudanese side responded after the break. Victor Mbaoma scored twice for the Brewers, but they could not hold on to the lead.

That comeback should be fresh in Tusker’s minds as they prepare for the return match at Nyayo National Stadium tomorrow.

The Kenyan side, however, have one useful advantage, the two away goals. Under the competition's away-goal provision, a 0-0 or 1-1 draw would send Tusker through.

Another 2-2 result would leave the teams level on aggregate and away goals, taking the tie to penalties. A 3-3 draw or any higher-scoring draw would favour Al Ahli because the visitors would have scored more goals away from home.

But those calculations should not encourage Tusker to sit deep for 90 minutes.

Their best football in the first leg came when they were willing to attack. Mbaoma's two goals put them in an excellent position, while the second half exposed their vulnerability when Al Ahli increased the pressure.

The challenge at Nyayo is therefore one of balance. Tusker need to remain dangerous going forward without giving their opponents easy opportunities to attack.

The first goal could have a major effect on the match. If Tusker score, Al Ahli will need to find a way back into the tie again. If the Sudanese side score first, the pressure immediately shifts to the hosts.

Tusker are also seeking to improve on their previous Confederation Cup campaign. In 2021/22, they reached the play-off round before CS Sfaxien ended their run. Progressing past Al Ahli would give them a new benchmark in the competition.

Home support should help, but the decisive factor is likely to be discipline.
