One person has died following a clash between two groups of goons in Kisumu city on Sunday.

The rival groups came into confrontation at ACK Cathedral in Kisumu, where one group was headed to interrupt the church service while another came out to prevent them from entering the church premises.

The National Police Service (NPS), in a statement on Sunday evening, said the violent confrontation led to the death of one person and several injuries.

NPS further reports the torching of nine motorcycles and damage to a police vehicle.

Following swift police intervention, eight suspects were arrested and placed in custody pending arraignment in court. Efforts to identify and apprehend other individuals involved are ongoing,” said NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.

Linda Mwananchi leaders James Orengo and Edwin Sifuna were attending a church service at the cathedral where the violent confrontation erupted.

The police have also dismissed reports of a shooting incident in Nyahururu, where another group of the Linda Mwananchi brigade, led by Murang’a governor Irungu Kang’ata were holding a rally.

Kang’ata had earlier reported that his bodyguard was shot when their meeting was disrupted.

Police have, however, dismissed the claims, saying there was no shooting.

In Nyahururu Town, a group of individuals attempted to disrupt a political rally by throwing stones, causing minor injuries to several members of the public, including one Joseph Gitau, who sustained a chest injury and was treated and discharged,” said Nyaga.

According to NPS, police responded promptly and arrested six suspects, who have been placed in custody pending arraignment.

The police service has since warned of political violence, saying “no person—regardless of social status, political affiliation or public office—is above the law.”

Anyone found engaging in violence, sponsoring criminal gangs, inciting supporters or disrupting lawful gatherings will be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law,” added NPS.
